A Typical Day at Little Barn Owls Day Nursery

This is an example of how your child may spend his or her day with us. Our monthly themes and activities change regularly and are thoughtfully planned weeks in advance, often to coincide with world-wide celebrations and seasonal events.

Personal Development

8am - The children are dropped off and breakfast is served. The children choose free play activities once they have finished eating.

9 am - All children are encouraged to participate in the morning’s first planned activity: Snowy Owls (1 – 3 years) e.g painting, junk modelling, messy play, arts & crafts or cooking based around our learning theme.

Tawny Owls (3-5 years) – Outdoor play in the garden to collect grass, leaves, mud and daisies, back inside to make and paint collages for our ‘How things Grow’ monthly theme.

10am - Snowy Owls - outdoor supervised time in the playground to enjoy swinging, jumping, sliding and running around together.

10.30am - Snack bar opens and drink time.

10.45am - French class / Yoga / Spanish Class or second planned activity, followed by free play or story and rest time in Cuddle Corner for the youngest ones.

12pm - All children come together for a short story and discussion of what we enjoyed that morning and our learning theme, a song and learning the letter and number of the day.

12.15pm - Lunch - a delicious home cooked meal is served.

1pm - Afternoon Session - Registration followed by planned activity:
Tawny Owls and Snowy Owls - Music and Movement time. The children are encouraged to join in singing and learning the actions whilst using musical instruments.

1.45pm - Outdoor play (Snowy Owls and Tawny Owls visit the playground to run off steam)
Some Snowy Owls have a rest/sleep in Cuddle Corner for those who need it with a member of staff supervising.

2.30pm - Wake up and snack bar opens

3.00pm - Activity time based around our learning theme (paper mache, cooking, pottery, arts and crafts, toddler and pre-school disco time, fun with the alphabet and numbers time) followed by free play.

4.30pm - A hot delicious supper is served.

5.15pm - Active group games or parachute games followed by theme discussion time of what we have enjoyed doing that afternoon, learning the letter and number of the day, songs and stories.

5.45pm - 6.00pm - Home.

Outdoor playChild-led play We would always encourage every child to join in our activities, however if a child is busy doing something else they are enjoying at the time we would ask them later if they wanted to join in then.

Weather All our outdoor play is naturally weather dependent, but as we ask for every child to keep wellies, a hat and a rain coat in their bag, we don’t let a bit of drizzle put us off!

Nap Times We believe the children’s nursery routine should reflect what they are used to at home. We always try to follow a child’s sleep times the parents ask us to for continuity.
